IMA - Mid-South/Memphis Chapter
HISTORY
OF OUR
CHAPTER
The
Institute of Management Accountants was organized in 1919 in Buffalo, New York. In ensuing years,
members and chapters spread to the larger cities. Several inquiries from members and other
accountants in the Memphis area led to personal visits to Memphis by Dr. Stuart Cameron McLeod,
National Secretary. Several organizational meetings were held, and on October 2, 1930, the
Memphis Chapter was chartered with 40 members as the 38th chapter of the National Association.
In that year, the total membership of all 38 chapters was just over 6,000 members.
In
addition to the city of Memphis, the Memphis Chapter was initially authorized to accept members from
surrounding communities in West Tennessee, Arkansas and Mississippi. Although the Memphis Chapter's
area has decreased through the chartering of the Central Arkansas Chapter in 1959, the Northeast
Mississippi Chapter in 1970 and the West Tennessee Chapter in 1982, the amount of influence has
increased. By 1988, the Memphis Chapter had grown to over 500 members representing over 200
business, governmental, educational and professional organizations in Memphis and the
Mid‑South Area.
The
Memphis Chapter meets regularly on the third Thursday evening of each month. In addition to the
regularly scheduled technical meetings, the Chapter also schedules luncheon meetings for members who
work in downtown Memphis and in East Memphis, professional development seminars for the additional
education of its members, and social activities for the fellowship of its members.
A
half century of service to members has provided opportunities for personal development through
continuing education, leadership in the Chapter's administration and enjoyable fellowship.
